Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” John 4:10 NLT
I was thirsty. So thirsty it felt like my body was shriveling up.
But it was not the kind of thirst that I could quench by filling a tumbler with the water that is pumped up from the well on our property. No, it was a much deeper thirst.
I had been walking through a desert I had not seen coming. You see, I thought when God moved me to the new position and found a publisher for my first book I would continue to ride that mountaintop experience. I thought I had made it through a trying time and now things would be good. But God had other plans.
God wanted me to walk through the desert so I would learn to thirst for living water.
Like most women I know, I had been living on the sips of water that came from moments of others approving of and affirming me. But much like Jesus tells the woman at the well, drinking from this well left me thirsty again and again (John 4:13). And I had started to notice that the thirst was deepening each time.
Each time they wanted me to hustle harder for the sip. But that made me even thirstier. Their approval was never enough.
Finally, near burnout, I found an oasis in the desert.
A dear friend counseled me that maybe God wanted me to seek Him out in a new way. It felt right so I started reading more deeply of His Word. That propelled me to see more of His character and His great love for me. This deepened our relationship until I allowed Him to sing over me every day.
Then one day I woke up and I realized I had found the living water. I had learned to drink from the well that never runs dry. I found the gift that Jesus tells the woman of the well about.
Listen to His words - “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” (John 4:10).
Because I know that you live in this post-modern world where the expectations for women are astronomical, I bet you are thirsty too. Together, let's drink deeply of God's word and let Him sing His love over us and break free from the world's standards that leave us feeling burnout and not enough.
Each week, you will be getting an email from me on Mondays entitled Drink From the Well, that will share what God is teaching me and invite you to drink deeply from His Word. It will include a devotional, followed by a Bible Study, Scripture references, and contemplative questions to help you learn more about God and apply His Truth to your life. You can complete these pieces as time allows in your week. There are no set expectations here and no reason to feel guilty. God simply wants you to know how much He loves you and how much He wants to be with you. He does that through the time you spend in His Word and in communication with Him.
I am so excited for this journey together to Drink From the Well. Next week we will kick off this new series!! Look for an email starting on Monday, May 2nd. See you then!
Drink From the Well Weekly
I believe that the living water is God's Word and His Spirit bringing the Word alive in us as we read it and commune with Him! I also believe this living water is the thing we are all thirsting for and the only source that will truly satisfy our souls. So, I have created the Drink From the Well devotional Bible study series to help guide others to drink deeply from God's word and be satisfied in His love.
